Cystic Acne - Easy to Get and Hard to Get Rid Of

Cystic acne is the worst type of acne! This form of acne is not just simple pimples that have enlarged. It is actually a type of abscess occurring when the oil ducts become clogged with debris and become infected. When pimple turns to an abscess, the inflammation and infection in the oil glands spread and produced inflammation and pus in the tissue surrounding the pore. The infections are very deep under the skin and unable to rise to the surface. They are extremely painful, red and swollen.

Although some people are prone to cysts, one of the greatest contributors to acne cysts is continued reinfection of the same area. Inadvertently by squeezing, picking and constant touching, new bacteria is re-introduced and the cycle starts all over again. Other contributing factors to cystic acne are stress, changing hormones, unhealthy lifestyle, and poor nutrition.

The treatment of acne cysts can be touch and go. They can be very difficult to treat as they don't readily respond to normal acne treatments. However, there are some common remedies can be found in ones own home, or the drug store that are worth giving a try.

Over-the-counter medications do work with some success depending on the severity of the cysts. There are a myriad of acne products to pick from. They come in various strengths and modes of application, everything from ointments to wipes. Generally they all contain one of two active ingredients; Either benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid. Each has a different mode to treat the acne cysts, but the results can be the same with either use.

Home made remedies are out of the ordinary, but effective. There are many, many remedies, and they are reported to work very well. One of the old tried and true methods is a dab of toothpaste (not gel). Toothpaste reduces the inflammation, infection and redness of acne cysts. Another solution is crushed aspirin mixed into a paste with water and spread on the cyst. Honey and cinnamon mixed together as a paste acts as a natural antibiotic as does garlic paste or oil.

Healing acne cysts takes time and patience. The deep rooted nature of the abscess and the fact that it cannot dissipate the pus, means that acne cysts takes more time to heal. It can take up to several months to completely heal.

Sometimes, however, we just have to give in and get professional help. If the cysts are persistent and not responding to treatment, get medical treatment. Persistent acne cysts will scar. A specialist like a dermatologist, will have stronger treatments to give the healing process a boost. Oral medication such as antibiotics is normally the first course of action, however, there are other very strong medications available that are made specifically for the treatment of severe acne. With strong medicine comes strong side effects, so just be clear with your doctor as to the side effects. Some of these oral medications can have undesirable and lasting repercussions.

If there is a tendency to be prone to cysts, then take good care of the skin. Clean the cystic area at least twice a day. Control re-infection by refraining from touching the cyst. Use treatment regularly and as directed. Acne cysts can be controlled with the proper course of action. Above all, see a doctor if you have too.
